POSITION BACKGROUND
The Athletic Department in the Division of Kinesiology and Athletics is currently seeking a full-time tenure track Kinesiology Instructor/Head Baseball Coach commencing with the 2020 Fall semester. The primary teaching assignment involves teaching Kinesiology degree and transferable classes in Introduction to Kinesiology, Exercise and Sport Psychology, Sport Management, Strength and Conditioning, Exercise physiology, professional activities, and athletic team classes related to baseball. This assignment also includes curriculum and program development, participation in department, division, college committees, and participatory governance activities assuming leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole; collaboration across disciplines and the leveraging of student support resources; and participation in ongoing professional development, including but not limited to division specific pedagogy and leadership training.

The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed. The ideal candidate for this position embraces the overall mission of Orange Coast College and the Coast Community College District, with a clear, focused commitment to supporting teaching and academic excellence, and student learning and success through the work of Kinesiology and baseball.

The Division is organized into three Departments that include Kinesiology, Public Health, and Athletics. Each Department provides a collection of academic experiences to prepare students for professional fields or extended areas of study in human performance and health, while the Athletic Department provides students an opportunity to participate at the highest level of intercollegiate competition within the California Community College system.

The Division offers academic programs in kinesiology, athletic training, health, fitness and exercise, yoga, and lifeguarding. The array of activity classes our program offers provides students with the opportunity to develop, refine, or advanced skills and knowledge in aquatics, racquet sports, fitness, individual and team sports, or eastern movement studies. We also offer advanced movement and fitness experiences for students with special needs through our Adapted Program.

The purpose of the Division of Kinesiology and Athletics at Orange Coast College is to:
  • Educate students, faculty, and staff at Orange Coast College on the meaning of Kinesiology and its importance within a globally diverse society
  • Provide rigorous, competitive, and meaningful athletic competition where leadership, physical skills, and individual character are developed.
  • Support student-athletes through their academic and athletic pursuits.
  • To serve the Orange County Community by providing outstanding academic programs in Kinesiology and Public Health while offering a broad comprehensive Athletic Program.
  • Respond to the growing demands of students, faculty, and staff to learn, participate, and live an active lifestyle.
  • Increase students' understanding of high risk and protective health behaviors, and provide the tools to make positive health behavior choices in their development and adoption of a lifestyle that contributes to a high quality of life.
  • Create academic programs and services in Kinesiology for students to study the disciplines of Kinesiology, Health Education and Public Health Science for transfer and employment, and/or enrichment.

    Qualifications and Physical Demands

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
    Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Provide instruction in Kinesiology and baseball in accordance with established course outlines.
  • Participate in curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation; participate in and develop programs to measure student performance.
  • Maintain current knowledge in the subject matter areas.
  • Recruiting, budget development and management, practice/game management, academic and social media supervision of student-athletes, public relations, and fundraising.
  • Lead in all phases of coaching intercollegiate baseball at the community college level, including but not limited to the recruitment of quality college student-athletes; lead practice, competitions and games; enforce team policies and rules as well as college policies and rules, fundraising and community involvement.
  • Create, implement, and assess a recruitment plan with a focus on student athletes from Orange County.
  • Create, implement, and assess a player development program which includes improvement in the whole person. Areas include but aren't limited to: athleticism, academic progress, and positive citizenship.
  • Manage, support, mentor, and be responsible for the actions and decisions of assistant baseball coaches.
  • Comply with the rules and regulations of the California Community College Athletic Association, Orange Empire Conference, and Orange Coast College as outlined by Divisional Handbook.
  • Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics.
  • Fulfill the professional responsibilities of a full-time faculty member including, but not limited to the following: teach all scheduled classes unless excused under provisions of Board Policy; follow the department course outlines; keep accurate records of student enrollment, attendance, and progress; submit student grades according to established deadlines; post and maintain scheduled office hours; participate in departmental meetings and college and/or district-wide activities and committees as assigned.
  • Assignment may include day, evening, weekend, and online sections.
  • MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Must meet one of the following qualifications under (1) through (4):
  • Valid California Community College instructor credential, appropriate to the subject, per Education Code 87355 (issued prior to July 1, 1990); OR
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, education with an emphasis in physical education, kinesiology, physiology of exercise or adaptive physical education; OR
  • Bachelor's degree in either of the above AND a Master's degree in any life science, dance, physiology, health education, recreation administration or physical therapy from an accredited institution ;
  • Or, possess a combination of education and experience that is at least equivalent to the above.   • DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Educational and/or instructional preparation in Kinesiology and Coaching.
  • A minimum of 5 years of recent experience in coaching baseball and 3 years as a head coach, with recent experience teaching Kinesiology or Physical Education courses.
  • Evidence of student success in teaching/coaching Kinesiology.
  • Evidence of participation in student success initiatives in a post-secondary setting. Evidence of an ability to address the instructional needs of a diverse and frequently underprepared student population.
  • Evidence of an ability to effectively engage with and facilitate authentic learning for students of diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences.
  • Evidence of an ability to adapt teaching pedagogy to the knowledge level (developmental through transfer) and personality of each individual and class.
  • Evidence of an ability to self-reflect and respond to an evidence-based assessment of student learning.
  • Evidence of innovation, scholarship, or leadership in the teaching of Kinesiology and developing a baseball program.
  • Desire and demonstrated an ability to actively participate in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Coast Community College District.
  • Desire and evidence of an ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
  • Ability to work with computers, and use the Internet and interactive technologies to engage students in on-campus and online courses (where academically appropriate); and intrinsic motivation and ability to develop and teach online courses.
  • Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Conditions of Employment For a full-time, two-semester position a maximum starting range of $54,626 to $93,132 is offered, based on the 2020-2021 salary schedule of $54,626 to $130,233. In addition, an annual stipend of $3,186 is offered for possession of an earned doctorate from an accredited institution. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE
